The Long Island Network

Maria Laurino at Garden City HotelThe Long Island Network celebrated author Maria Laurino's magnificent novels about ethnicity, feminism and stereotypes as they sipped tea and nibbled yummy pastries and tea sandwiches at the beautiful Garden City Hotel.
Maria's readings spurred engaging conversations about images of Italians in our society and media. Many questions evolved in  discussions about the stereotypes that still seem to prevail despite the many successes of Italian Americans.
Maria is an articulate, erudite Italian American professor and mother---an inspiration to all of the Members and Friends of NOIAW that attended the event.

Carmella Marrone
Carmella Marrone, NOIAW member and Executive Director & Founder of Women and Work, recently received her PhD in Sociology from the CUNY Graduate Center. She holds an MA in Applied Social Research and BA degrees in Sociology and Women's Studies from Queens College.
Her thesis is entitled "Women and Work: A Model Community for the Intervention of Poverty and Violence." In an opening statement for her PhD Defense, Dr. Marrone revealed that her first-hand knowledge of community came from her experience growing up in an extended Italian-American family in a working-class community of immigrants. She learned about compassion, responsibility and the meaning of family and applied these principles in creating the Women and Work Program in 1998.

Delirious Naples: For a Cultural, Intellectual and Urban History of the City of the Sun

November 16 - 18, 2011
Hofstra University

November 19
Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò

This conference is dedicated to staging an encounter-at once critical and celebratory-with historic and contemporary Naples and will explore all dimensions of Neapolitan culture from an interdisciplinary perspective. As a way of celebrating and learning from Naples and its rich culture, the intellectual work of the conference will be supplemented by a wide array of events: musical performances;  theatrical and poetic readings; tributes to figures who have defined Neapolitan culture such as the playwright Eduardo De Filippo, the singer Roberto Murolo, and the filmmaker Francesco Rosi; and discussions with celebrated American artists who have staged profound encounters with contemporary Naples, and the installation artist B. Amore who has prepared a site-specific work--"Naples-New York--for the David Filderman Gallery.

Please click here for a full schedule.
