Join us for a book discussion and presentation of Thank You for the Shoes: the story of an extraordinary man with author and Norwalk native Raffaela Marie Rizzo! A light lunch will be provided by the Norwalk Public Library. Books will be available for purchase.
This story is based on the life of a man named Michelangelo Rizzo, known as Michele to his family and later Mike to everyone else. It reads like a novel and spans eighty years, two continents and several U.S. states. The story opens in 1909 as this thirteen-year-old fatherless boy leaves his hometown of Platania in the mountains of southern Italy on a solo journey to find the grave of the man whose blood runs in his veins, a man he cannot possibly remember. Through flashbacks, we come to understand the circumstances and challenges faced by Mike’s father and millions of others who were part of a thirty-year migration to the Americas in the late 1880s and early part of the Twentieth Century.
Ms. Rizzo is a former senior business and marketing communications executive. She earned an MBA from Jacksonville (FL) University and a BA in media studies from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Her first real paying job was at the Norwalk Public Library when she was barely 16. During her years at Norwalk High School, she also served as a volunteer in the school library during her free periods. A firm believer in giving back, Ms. Rizzo has been a life-long volunteer in community and faith-based organizations to help those in need and to expand educational opportunities. She currently serves as the volunteer president of the Amelia Island, FL, Book Festival which runs the Authors in Schools Literacy Program. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Nassau County Florida Boys & Girls Club.
