12 Jul Rhythm is the Cure: Healing Dance & Percussion Workshop with Alessandra Belloni
NOIAW member Alessandra Belloni will hold her 16th annual Rhythm is the Cure intensive healing workshop from August 16 to 23, 2016 in Tuscany, Italy. This 7-day intensive will feature Italian ritual dances that have been used as music and dance therapy for centuries throughout the Mediterranean.
Participants will learn the unique style of tambourine playing and the ancient healing trance dance of the tarantella, used to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula. The “bite of the tarantula” was a myth applied to a condition familiar to women through the centuries who experienced abuse, repressed sexuality, powerlessness, and the feeling of being “caught in a web that binds them.” Sufferers, known as “tarantate,” endure “tarantismo,” a lethal mixture of depression, loneliness, and oppression. Participants will learn the following healing ritual dances: the Tammorriata, the Pizzica Taranata, the Ritmo e Danza di San Rocco and the Tarantella alla Montemaranese.
Accommodations are located 45 minutes outside of Florence in a beautiful 17th Century villa turned Bed and Breakfast, La Chiara di Prumiano. The trip includes an excursion to the medieval walled city of Siena to visit the Black Madonna in the Duomo and a pilgrimage to the Abbey of San Galgano, a ruined Cistercian gothic abbey. As part of the transformational experience, guests will craft their own unique puppet in a puppet-making workshop led by Gaia, the owner of the villa. The participants will then use the puppets in a short puppet theatre performance.
